3 Tiers of PucaTrade Membership

Big changes are happening on PucaTrade this month. I know, I know. Finally, right? We’re almost ready to drop the “Beta” and unveil PucaTrade “Revised.” In my last post, I talked about the cool new features you can expect from Revised. Today, let’s take a look at the changes that are coming to PucaPro (our paid membership program). To give you the bad news before the good—we’re phasing out the deck manager (for now). My feeling is that this is a peripheral feature that would take an extraordinary amount of time and effort to do right. And PucaTrade is a trading website. We want to really nail the trade-oriented features before we offer support for deck management. We may bring this back one day, and when we do, we’ll be sure to give it our fullest attention, and make sure it’s done right. I know some of you may have used this feature for list prioritization (like Wish Lists, etc). We feel that Wish Lists are a key feature of the trading experience, so in addition to Have and Want lists, we’ll be offering a Wish List as well for the cards you want, but aren’t fully ready to trade for. 3 Tiers of PucaTrade Membership As you know, there’s currently 2 tiers of PucaTrade Membership; “Free” and “PucaPro.” When we launch Revised, there will be 3 tiers: Common, Uncommon, and Rare. Common The common level is (unsurprisingly) the free level. This tier is undergoing a huge facelift, and will be exactly 1 million times cooler. But I’m actually not here to hype the coolness right now. There are a couple things that are pretty radically different that I want to communicate to you guys. First off, the Send a Card page will no longer show only the cards you have that other people want and can afford. Now, the Send a Card page will show every card that anyone can afford. The reason we’re structuring it this way is to make the whole signup process easier for new members. Right now, there’s a ton of opacity to the trading process on PucaTrade. People are understandably dejected and confused when they sign up for PucaTrade and immediately go to the Send a Card page—only to find that it’s blank. The fact is, constructing a complete Have List takes time and is a barrier to entry. We want to live up to our promise that you can start trading on PucaTrade in 30 seconds. An important thing to note with this change is that Want Lists will have increased visibility now. Indeed, Want Lists will be publicly visible to other PucaTraders from your profile. That reminds me: you’ll also have customizable profiles now. In the beginning, they’ll be pretty basic. They’ll have support for Avatars, and some optional personal info like your Facebook and Twitter accounts, a text field for anything you wish to share with the world, and your Want Lists. But as we continue to develop some of the more mission-critical features on the site (and get feedback from you guys), we’ll take a closer look at the profile spaces and add the features you all want the most. Uncommon This will be the new PucaPro. Uncommon will be the least expensive paid tier, for the rate of $3.75 per month at the yearly rate (and $5 at the monthly rate). Existing Pro members will be grandfathered in at the current rate until their existing subscription ends. Among other features, PucaTraders at the Uncommon level will be able to trade Foils. By the end of October, our goal is to support Condition and Non-English cards for Uncommon members as well. It was a tough decision to limit the trade of foils to our Pro-Tier members; in my heart of hearts I want everyone to be able to trade foils (and every card, for that matter) for free, but what we realized is that we’re converting almost every existing Pro-feature to a free Common feature, and it was really important to me that you guys still feel like you’re getting great value out of the Uncommon Tier. I don’t doubt that there will come a time in the future when we fully develop the Uncommon Tier and feel that we’re offering $3.75 per month worth of fantastic value to our Uncommon members. At that time it may be appropriate to release Foils, Condition, and Non-English cards at the Common level. But for now, it’s critical that we recoup some of the costs of development for these new features, so that we can finance the development of even better ones. Rare We’re working on a 3rd tier with even more amazing features, but this post is getting a bit long, so I’ll save it for the next one. Until then, Happy Trading! -Eric Freytag Drive a Tranquil Bargain

What are we doing? #PucaTrade Week 32 of 52:

Guess what? We’re getting to the point where we can start announcing a timeline for completed features! Today’s post is all about lifting the veil that surrounds the process of PucaTrade’s development. I’ve been hesitant to write about this in the past because previously the dev process has been a bit nebulous, and I had no interest in setting deadlines that we couldn’t meet. But as we make progress, a timeline for completion is becoming a bit more clear. Anyone who’s checked out PucaTrade’s forums knows that we have over 14 pages of features we want to build. So it’s been a challenge to identify the mission-critical features, and organize the rest by priority. Ordinarily, this might not be the most complicated task in the world, but for those of you who don’t know, my previous developer quit about a year ago and I (Eric Freytag) don’t know any code beyond basic html and css. The new development team consists of some awesome dudes named Mitch Trale and Chris Powell. They’re both visionary developers, masters of code, and MtG enthusiasts. In short, they’re perfect for the job of building a better PucaTrade. So part of the challenge that faced us was that the new dev team basically had to start from scratch. Our original plan was to release all of the version 2.0 features at the same time, but we quickly realized that it would be way better to start making improvements and releasing them incrementally. This would enable you guys to enjoy the progress as soon as possible, while allowing you to participate by offering feedback and suggestions for improvement. So we set about clustering these changes into categories. Since PucaTrade is currently in the “Beta” stage, we decided to continue using this lexicon and started defining the feature-set for “Revised.” The Revised feature set is essentially a re-build of the existing site, with a few awesome improvements mixed in. It turns out that there were some inefficiencies with how the original site was written that would prevent us from scaling the site properly as our membership grew, so first priority was addressing things like that. So the major purpose of Revised is just to get the existing site transferred over to our new platform, and make sure that this transition happens smoothly and seamlessly. This is a huge job, but the good news is that once it’s done we can start releasing features with incredible agility and ease. But don’t worry—along with these (somewhat invisible) back-end improvements, we’ll be able to pick some low-hanging fruit that will really improve your experience of the site. Here’s a list of the new improvements we have scheduled for the Revised stage of development. The site will look way better (thank Godsire). Recipients and Senders will both have visibility on the address information for their trading partners When you log in, you’ll be able to stay logged in. The signup process will utilize 2-factor authentication and e-mail verification. All members will have access to e-mail notification settings, and be able to adjust these from their Profile. The bulk card adder will accept .csv files Lists can be exported into common text-based formats (MODO, mtg workstation, .csv). The Search will include parameters for price, card-format (Standard, Legacy, etc.), and min/max Converted Mana Cost The Search will include sorting mechanisms for Alphabetical, Most Wanted, Most Offered, and Highest/Lowest Price I’m sure there’s a couple items on that list that will cause you to all to collectively breathe sighs of relief, but much of the really cool stuff is scheduled for the next stage of development, which we’ve titled “Legends.” I’ll save some discussion of Legends for another blog post, but to save you from the agony of anticipation, I’ll leave you with this tidbit of inside knowledge: Our goal for the release of these Revised features is early September. PucaTrade levels up this fall.

PucaStylz!

Got to do a ton of silk screening this week! It was actually really nice to step away from the computer for a few days and just make some stuff with my hands. We’re making great progress with the IndieGoGo rewards fulfillment now. The Populate, Transform, Buyback, Fortify, Equip, Totem Armor, Kicker, and Multikicker Tiers have all been fulfilled. We’re just waiting on the custom sleeves now, so to everyone who contributed at the Shroud, Entwine, and Soulbond tiers—thank you so much for your patience. We’ll keep you posted with some sweet pics as soon as they arrive. In other news, development progress on the site is humming along nicely. PucaTrade just teamed up with Mitch Trale and Chris Powell of mct.co and http://eminent-designs.com/, respectively. They’re a badass team of coders with deep love for Magic the Gathering. They’re perfect candidates for the updates to the site we desperately need. Sweet teaser trailer: they’ll be developing the updates to the site using responsive design. So PucaTrade will look beautiful on whatever device you use to access it (good-bye, double click). Drive a Tranquil Bargain, y’all!

What are we doing? #PucaTrade Week 5 of 52:

I hired 3 economists this week. Two are Phd’s, and one is getting his Masters Degree at a college in Canada. Why? People who trade on PucaTrade all seem to have the consensus that there are not enough PucaPoints in our economy. Intuitively, I agree with them. But as the steward of this microcosm of trade, I feel that it’s my duty to only act from a position of knowledge, insight, and mathematical theory (as opposed to a position of intuition or even worse: ignorance). I’m incredibly excited to read their reports. They’re all completely by this project, and in the fashion of true academics they seem to be excited to put their knowledge to practice. The mathematical results they produce will be instrumental in policy making on the site, and will certainly result in a better trading experience for us all.

What are we doing? #PucaTrade Week 19 of 52:

This was a fantastic week for PucaTrade. I had a chance to order the Inkwell Looters format-buttons from Purebuttons.com and submitted the final proof of our card-sleeves to Legion. They’re gonna look great, and I can’t wait to start rocking both. I also had a chance to make it to GP Portland to meet a fantastic guy named Charles Webber. He’s a veteran of web-project management, avid Magic the Gathering player, and he loves PucaTrade. He has graciously offered to oversee the production of all the great features we’ve been raving about, and manage the process of turning these conceptual dreams into code. Between games of the tournament, we hashed out a fantastic plan for 2013 and can’t wait to get cracking. This is a huge step for PucaTrade, and we’re so excited to have Charles on board. I also had an opportunity to talk with Zac Hill about all the ways that cards currently move from owner to owner in the Magic community. He and I spoke at length about the effects of unbalanced exchange (unfair trades) in the secondary MtG market, and were able to come to this understanding: Magic the Gathering players come from all over the place, from all walks of life. This is great because it gives us opportunities to broaden our cultural horizons, but can also foster some unfortunate dynamics between strangers. Imagine yourself in a trade between you and your friends, or even the acquaintances that you see regularly at your local game store. How do you conduct yourself in this trade? Now imagine yourself in a trade with a stranger that you’ve never met and will likely never see again. How do you conduct yourself differently in these two situations? Regardless of what you answered, the reality is that a disparity exists here. We may be allured by the ritz of “Pack to Power” value trading, but in that seduction we neglect the untold story in that quest for financial gain. Can it not be said that every increase to your card-pool’s total value represents the loss of someone else’s? What would the Pack to Power quest look like if you were required to state imbalances in trade value before completing every trade? It would change the game. From a conceptual standpoint, most traders agree that they’re entitled to a fair trade. What happens in the moment when they realize that they just lost $10-$50 worth of card-value due to their own unfortunate lack of knowledge? Would they feel cheated? How does this impact the way they will interact with the next Magic trader that they meet? Or even the next player they sit across from? At the GP this weekend, I spoke with many players who had concerns about the increased prevalence of value-trading in the MtG community, and its impacts on the community at large. Although I originally made PucaTrade as a convenience-service (while acknowledging the benefits of a system that leveled the playing field for traders), I’m starting to realize that PucaTrade may have larger implications and benefits to the way Magic players perceive one another. I hope to explore these ideas further, and encourage you to reach out to me with comments, questions, or feedback of any kind. As always, Drive a Tranquil Bargain.

What's Next for PucaTrade?

Around the time that I started preparing for PucaTrade’s IndieGoGo project, I stopped blogging about progress with development on the site. The entirety of my time and attention was fixated on our fundraising project, and there was so much to do that I never had time to blog. But now, the project is over. And the progress we make should prove to be way more interesting than fundraising, and actually worth sharing. My plan is to crank out the rewards-fulfillment over the next 2 weeks so that I can direct my fullest attention to the next version of the site. As the merch comes in, I’ll share photos here, and I’ll share screenshots of the new site pages whenever I can. And when a working prototype of the next site is available, you guys will be the first to know. Stay tuned!

It’s 11:43 pm in Oakland...

and there’s 17 minutes left on IndieGoGo’s clock. We’ve raised 144% of our goal together, guys. I’m incredibly inspired (even if rather exhausted). The MtG community has demonstrated an incredible amount of support for this project. The positive feedback you’ve given me has left me spellbound, and the thanks and appreciation you’ve shown energizes me to make PucaTrade the best it can possibly be. Big thanks to my Non-MtG friends and family, who supported this project even though they’re not sure why. :) 2013 is going to be an incredibly exciting year for us. I can’t wait to share the improvements to the site with you all. I really do consider you to be a part of this team, and I know you’ll guide this project to greatness with insightful feedback and support. Much Love to You All! -Freytag

WE! DID IT!!!

WOOTWOOTWOOTWOOTWOOT!!!! All of YOU made this happen, and I Thank YOU all so much for your support. You sent e-mails, told friends and family, tweeted words of encouragement, shared PucaNews on Facebook, wrote articles, graciously hosted me on your podcasts, and backed this project up in a million other ways, and all I can say is: THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT! You guys are amazing, one and all. Some of you I know quite well, and some I’ve never met, but I’ll remember this day for the rest of my life, and want you all to know that you have a special place in my heart. Again—and it can’t be said enough—Thank You so much. Much Love, Eric

Week 1: Off to a Great Start!

PucaTrade’s IndieGoGo project is off to a great start! You guys helped as achieve 1/3 of our goal in the first week alone, and I can’t tell you much this helps. To show our appreciation and to keep up the fabulous momentum, PucaTrade is currently running a special promotion for people who donate to our project. It’s a way for you to earn some extra trade-credits by spreading the word about the project so we can achieve our goals together. Here’s how it works: For every person that donates to the IndieGoGo project who is referred there by you, you’ll earn 10 PucaPoints for every dollar they donate. Details: If you sign up for an IndieGoGo account, IndieGoGo will automatically track your referrals. Once you log in, there will be a personalized “share” link just for you located under the project video. Share your personal link to get credit for your referrals. If our project succeeds, we’ll credit the points to your account on May 1st. Thanks in advance for any and all help spreading the word! PucaTrade has always been a community project, and with your help we can make it the best it can possibly be.

What are we doing? #PucaTrade Week 5 of 52:

PucaTrade went through a slight change of plans this week. An incredibly brilliant advisor of mine from Seattle turned me on to Kickstarter. I had always known that Kickstarter existed, but it never felt like a perfect fit for PucaTrade because we’ve never previously had a dire need for capital. One of the great things about PucaTrade has been the relatively small amount of overhead in requires (server costs and domain hosting), but this situation is changing a bit. PucaTrade needs to evolve. Quickly. It’s no longer a site that should evolve at the slow (albeit steady) pace that it has been plodding along at since April. I want personal profile spaces, visible want lists, support for condition, a messaging system, and support for foils! I want support for foreign languages, vacation mode, feedback ratings, a visually appealing Send page, and archived price data for Pro members. I want 2-factor authentication so that credits (PucaPoints) can be given freely to new members just for signing up, or completing their fist trade, or leaving their first feedback, or contributing their first post in the forum, or inviting a friend. I want all this and much, much more, and it turns out that all this requires capital. So I spent the week researching Kickstarter. It seems like an incredibly rad way for PucaTrade to get the boost it needs right now, to immediately finance the production of all the things I listed above. It was a powerful week. By whatever means necessary, it’s my promise to you all that I won’t stop working my ass off until all the features I listed above have been developed for you (and probably won’t stop even then). Until next week, Happy Trading!
